Star Wars
Star Wars is a premiere story telling franchise beloved around the world. While I try to tell a story with all of the products I design, Star Wars is the most fun due to the incredible catalogue of content they have. Each movie or event that Lucasfilm launched was an amazing creative opportunity. With so much Star Wars product in the market at all times, I really strived to make product with a unique perspective. The 2 caps below were launched in support of the Rise of Skywalker movie. Star Wars has always been about good vs evil and they provided a great Jedi graphic as part of their style guide. They didn’t have a First Order or Sith counterpart graphic, so I designed a dark side graphic as a way of balancing the force. Kylo Ren has such an uncommon light saber that was a must to be worked into the graphic. The lettering is inspired by heavy metal albums of the 80’s, something that shares the same aesthetic as the dark side of the force.
When Foot Locker approached s about creating some Star Wars t-shirts, I thought this was a great opportunity to push the stories of Star Wars even further as apparel has a bigger canvas with which to create. Putting in details into the background pushes the stories of these characters further, whether it’s using type texture in Kylo Ren’s mask warning him of the dark side, Han Solo’s circle of friends and enemies expressing exactly how they fell about him, or Emporer Palpatine sitting on his gold throne, unquestioned ruler of the galaxy.
The blister pack project was released at New York Comic Con in 2017 as an exclusive though Super Hero Stuff. The project was inspired by the 40th anniversary of Star Wars featuring mini caps based on classic characters and a full sized cap featuring concept art by John Berkey all packaged in a retro influenced, toy packaging from the 1970’s. The mini caps feature materials and graphics inspired by characters from the first Star Wars movie, such as using faux fur with an embroidered bandolier for Chewbacca and metallic gold faux leather for C-3PO. All of the mini caps are size 4 fitted caps, miniature versions of the New Era’s flagship 59Fifty™ silhouette. The full sized cap is faux suede with John Berkey concept illustrations sublimated on all of the panels and visor. The entire package measures a massive 32” high and 18.25’ across making a perfect wall display piece for any Star Wars collector.
