Greatest Misses: 2014 MLB All star game
New Era looking to replicate the success of the Voodoo Collection logo by creating one for the 2014 MLB All Star collection in Minneapolis Minnesota. Baseball has a long history where a lot of inspiration can be drawn. Since NewEra is a headwear company, looking at iconic baseball cap logos was a good place to start. The interlocking letter marks really say “baseball” whenever you see them. Even the host team, Minnesota Twins have an interlocking T & C. It was the 85th All Star game in history and I thought, we could interlock Roman numerals for 85, which is LXXXV.
With that as the foundation, I wanted to pay homage to the host state. L'Étoile du Nord is the Minnesota state motto, which is a french phrase meaning “the star of the north”. This was too good to ignore considering this was for an all star game. A birds eye view of the bases form a compass layout of north, south, east and west so second base was replaced with the star.
Ultimately this logo was never used probably due to a couple of factors. We had rights for the official All Star logo so it’s needless to have a second logo for the same event. Also, MLB All Star is a more fan centric event, as opposed to fashion culture of the NBA and the logo may not have been exactly right for the MLB All Star consumer.
